The assessment, diagnosis and monitoring of PTSD symptoms are basic steps in the clinical and research work to be carried out by health professionals working in mental health and in the field of psychological trauma, namely psychiatrists and clinical and health psychologists. In the PSPT evaluation, we found, on the one hand, the scarcity of adapted, validated and updated instruments for the Portuguese population and, on the other hand, the scarcity of reduced versions of the self-report instruments, of rapid application in clinical practice and with the purpose of screening and monitoring of individuals. In this context, two instruments of clinical utility and congruent with the criteria postulated in the DSM-V stand out, namely the PCL-5 (Weathers, Litz et al., 2013), an instrument for evaluating symptoms and the probable diagnosis of PTSD, and the National Stressful Events Survey PTSD Short Scale NSESSS-PTSD (Kilpatrick, Resnick & Friedman, 2013), used to identify the degree of severity of PTSD symptoms in the general and clinical population. The main objectives of this research project are the translation of the respective instruments into Portuguese, as well as their validation and assessment for the Portuguese population, in a comprehensive sample of the civilian and military population. The main contributions to clinical practice and research on PTSD are highlighted, in which a more informed assessment and diagnosis would be possible, in line with current criteria, useful not only for the military population but also for the general Portuguese population.
