Memory research traditionally adopts a structuralist approach whereby its different components (e.g., working memory, episodic memory) are defined and thoroughly explored. Such approach assumes, for the most part, that all information is treated equally within each of these components. Contrarily, a functional approach looks at memory considering its potential role(s). The adaptive memory framework combines this last idea while inspired by evolutionary psychology.
